How to Brew Potions in Minecraft

Brewing potions in Minecraft allows players to gain powerful effects such as healing, strength, invisibility, and more. Potions are a key element for survival and combat, especially in challenging environments. This article will guide you through the basics of potion brewing, including crafting a brewing stand, gathering ingredients, and creating potions.

How to Craft a Brewing Stand

To start brewing, you need a brewing stand. You craft a brewing stand with three blocks of cobblestone and one blaze rod in a crafting table, with the cobblestone blocks in a row and the blaze rod directly above them in the middle index. Blaze rods are obtained in the Nether by killing Blaze mobs - be prepared for a fiery battle!

Necessary Ingredients for Brewing Potions

To brew potions, there are some basic items you will need to get started. Firstly, you will need a water bottle that is the base for all potions. You can gather water bottles by filling glass bottles with water from a cauldron or any water source. Cauldrons can be filled with a water bucket and fill up to three glass bottles with water.

Secondly, you will need nether warts to brew awkward potions. These are then transformed into specific effect potions using additional ingredients. Nether warts are found in the Nether, typically in Nether fortresses. You can plant nether warts on soul sand to gather more for future brewing purposes.

The last base item you will need to brew potions is blaze powder, used to fuel the brewing process in brewing stands. To gather blaze powder, place a blaze rod into your inventory workbench or a crafting table, and you will receive two pieces of blaze powder. Each piece of blaze powder lasts for up to 20 uses, allowing you to brew 20 potions.

How to Brew Potions

The image above properly displays the process of brewing potions. Place your blaze powder in the fuel index on the left side, your water bottles in the bottom three slots, and a nether wart in the top slot to brew awkward potions. Then, place the item you are using to brew your selected effect in the top slot to create your new potions.

Potions brewed this way are considered regular potions. In other words, to feel the effects of the potion, you simply have to drink the potion as you would eat food, by holding down right-click while having the potion in your hand.

There are different variations of potions that you can create, such as splash and lingering potions. Splash potions are thrown onto the ground by right-clicking. As the name suggests, they splash their effects on all players within their area. You can transform your potions into splash potions using gunpowder, gathered by killing Creeper mobs.

Lingering potions are like splash potions, but as the name suggests, they leave a cloud of special effects that lasts for a certain period, depending on the potion's effect. They are made with Dragon's Breath, a type of item in a glass bottle that is collected by an ender dragon's breath attack or the purple effect clouds caused by dragon fireballs.

Common Potions and Extra Information

There are numerous potions that can be brewed in Minecraft. To see the full list of potions that can be brewed, we recommend checking out the Minecraft Wiki page for brewing - https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Brewing.

One very common type of potion that is brewed is a potion of swiftness. These potions grant a speed effect, allowing you to move faster. To brew these potions, you will need sugar, which is gathered by putting sugar cane in your workbench inventory or a crafting table.

Another useful type of potion is a potion of strength. These potions increase the strength of your attacks against mobs and other players. To brew these potions, you will need blaze powder, crafted from blaze rods as described earlier in the article.

Potions of invisibility are an interesting potion to brew for certain purposes. These can be especially useful in multiplayer realms for surprising or staying hidden from other players. These potions are brewed with fermented spider eyes, which are particularly intricate to craft. Place a piece of sugar, a spider eye, and a mushroom in a crafting table to make one fermented spider eye.

You can increase the length of the effects of the potion by adding redstone dust to the contents through the brewing stand. Additionally, the effects of a potion can be leveled up or enhanced with glowtone dust, gathered by breaking glowstone blocks in the Nether.

This article is a comprehensive, but basic, guide to getting started with brewing potions. Potions enhance your combat strategies and empower you to explore challenging areas with confidence.
