Understanding portal mechanics

In Minecraft, Nether portals create a connection between the Overworld and the Nether dimensions. The Nether acts as a fast-travel system, where 1 block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld. This 8:1 ratio is key to calculating perfect portal links.

Portal construction guide

  • Portals must be at least 4x5 blocks in size (including the obsidian frame)
  • The minimum obsidian required is 10 blocks
  • Portals can be up to 23x23 blocks in size
  • Use a Flint and Steel or Fire Charge to activate the portal
  • Ensure both portals are built at the exact calculated coordinates for reliable linking

Troubleshooting portal links

  • If portals aren't linking correctly, verify both portals are built at the exact calculated coordinates
  • Nether portals search for a valid portal within a 128 block radius in the Nether
  • In the Overworld, portals search within a 1024 block radius
  • Building portals above Y-128 in the Nether (on the roof) may cause linking issues
