How to build pixel art in Minecraft

Picking a picture

Pictures with big shapes and few colours work best: logos, game sprites and cartoon characters. Crop it first, so every block goes to what matters, and start small: 64 blocks wide is already a big build.

Building it by hand

  • Gather the blocks on the list first. Wool comes from sheep, concrete from concrete powder and water, and terracotta from clay smelted in a furnace.
  • Build a wall from the bottom row up, and a floor one row at a time from a corner. Point at a block in the preview to see its column and row.
  • For a tall wall, put up scaffolding first and work your way up.

Pasting it with WorldEdit

  1. Download the .schem file.
  2. Put it in your server's plugins/WorldEdit/schematics folder.
  3. In game, run //schem load followed by the file's name.
  4. Stand where the bottom-left corner should go and run //paste.
  5. Facing the wrong way? Run //rotate 180 before you paste.
